Lori Kiefer, M.D.

Lori Kiefer, MD is dual board-certified in pain management and  anesthesiology. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. She then attended Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree. After medical school, Dr. Kiefer completed her anesthesiology internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. After several years practicing as an anesthesiologist in Bloomington, Indiana, serving in multiple leadership roles and as volunteer clinical faculty at IUSM, she decided to pursue further training in interventional pain medicine and completed her fellowship at IUSM.

Dr. Kiefer’s interests include minimally invasive techniques for treatment of joint, neck, and back pain that include traditional therapies like injections, nerve blocks, and ablations as well as advanced options like spinal cord and DRG stimulators, kyphoplasty, peripheral nerve stimulation (Curonix, Sprint, and ReActiv8), posterior SI joint fusion (Nevro and PainTeq), basivertebral nerve ablation (Intracept), intradiscal allograft supplementation (Via Disc), and minimally invasive lumbar decompression (Mild).

Her patients find that her attention to detail, bedside manner, and thoroughness leave them feeling informed and confident with their plan of care.

Outside of work, Dr. Kiefer enjoys exercising, spending time with her family, reading, and enjoying the sunshine outside.

Daniel L. Kim, M.D.

Daniel Kim, MD, is a board certified neurosurgeon who specializes in complex spine surgery. He attended medical school and completed his neurosurgical residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana University, respectively. Dr. Kim has a neurosurgical focus on disorders of the spine. He is interested in all aspects of spinal care, including: degenerative conditions, trauma, revision surgeries, deformity and spine tumors.  He uses both open and minimally invasive techniques in the operating room, and he embraces the latest technology to make spinal surgery as safe and effective as possible. Dr. Kim has published on multiple neurosurgical topics and continues to be active with academic research. He currently serves as an editor for the International Journal of Spine Surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Kim enjoys the outdoors, barbequing, fishing and playing golf.

Jeffrey A. Konopka, M.D.

Jeffrey A. Konopka, M.D. is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic spine surgeon.  He is a native Hoosier and grew up in Greenwood, IN.He completed his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Purdue University and medical school from Indiana University School of Medicine.  He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.   He then received his advanced spine training from the prestigious Harvard Spine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Konopka is very excited to have returned home to the state of Indiana.

Dr. Konopka prides himself on listening to his patients and providing the least invasive treatment plan to get them back to their active everyday life. He delivers top notch spine care with the entire spectrum of spine conditions including degenerative, deformity, trauma and oncologic conditions.  He has special interests in performing minimally invasive procedures, navigation and robotic assisted spine surgery, as well as, training residents and fellows.  He is also very interested in developing new techniques and technologies using his engineering background as he did at Eli Lilly developing drug delivery devices.  Dr. Konopka has co-authored several publications, book chapters, and presented at both national and international spine conferences.

Dr. Konopka is an avid golfer, enjoys playing hockey, competing in triathlons, and cheering for Purdue athletics.  He enjoys spending time with his wife, who is also a physician in Indianapolis, and their dog Belle.

Paul Kraemer, M.D.

Paul Kraemer, M.D., is a native of Iowa.  He was educated at Cornell University in New York, The University of Iowa Medical School, and the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics Orthopaedic Surgery residency program.  He then spent an additional year at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center/ the University of Washington in a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical Spine Surgery fellowship.

Dr. Kraemer has a special interest in scoliosis, revision surgery, and minimally invasive techniques.  “My training at both Wisconsin and Harborview emphasized logical careful thinking about some of the most difficult problems affecting the Spine.  The more complex the problem, the more important it is to precisely identify the source of the pain, and design a solution, operative or non-operative, that makes sense.” He practices at Indiana Spine Hospital, Community Hospital, Riverview Hospital, and Indiana University Hospitals, where he serves as an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery  and is the Fellowship Director for the spine surgery fellowship.  In addition he is actively involved in research, resident education, and cross-specialty education of practicing physicians.  He has presented research and taught courses nationally at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society, as well as speaking locally on complex spine and diagnostic challenges to the IU departments of medicine, orthopaedics, and neurosurgery.

Dr. Kraemer and his family live in Carmel, where he enjoys time with his family and is an avid golfer and outdoors enthusiast.

Kevin Macadaeg, M.D.

Kevin E. Macadaeg, M.D., a founding member of Indiana Spine Group, is a minimally invasive spine specialist focusing on spinal diagnostics and therapeutics. Additionally, he is a clinical assistant professor for Indiana University School of Medicine’s department of anesthesiology, and an adjunct assistant professor for the physician assistant program at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Butler University. He is board certified in anesthesiology and pain management. Dr. Macadaeg’s areas of special medical interest include minimally invasive spinal diagnostics / therapeutics and spine research.

 

Ashwin Madupu, M.D.

Ashwin Madupu, M.D. is board-certified both in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. He is a fellowship-trained interventional spine specialist and has received the latest training in non-operative therapeutic and diagnostic techniques used to treat all aspects of spine pathology.

Dr. Madupu graduated from Osmania Medical College, one of the most prestigious medical schools in India. He moved to the United States after graduating from medical school and finished his surgical internship and anesthesia residency in New York. He then completed his Pain Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is fluent in English, Telugu and Hindi.

Michael H. McCarthy, MD, MPH, FAAOS

Michael H. McCarthy, MD, MPH, FAAOS, is a board certified, fellowship trained spine surgeon. He was born and raised in Little Rock, AR and was recruited to play collegiate football at Boston College. He attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on an academic scholarship and was inducted into the Delta Omega Society graduating with honors. He completed his general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was elected by his faculty to serve as Chief Resident of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and was given the Outstanding Teaching Award and the Brian Hartigan Memorial Award for his compassionate care, clinical excellence and dedication to resident and medical student education.

Dr. McCarthy completed fellowship training in spinal surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY with several world-renowned spine surgeons. He has received extensive training in both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical spine surgery techniques during his residency and fellowship and continues to combine them in his degenerative, minimally invasive and deformity practice.

Dr. McCarthy is passionate about patient centered care and evidence-based treatments through continued learning and research providing the best possible clinical solutions to his patients. While he believes that world class spine care begins with non-operative treatments, he strives to provide personalized surgical plans optimizing outcomes and maximizing his patients’ ability to return to the things they love. He was nominated into the Emerging Leadership Forum of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and served as a delegate in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Resident Assembly Committee. He is a current member of the North American Spine Society (NASS), American Medical Association (AMA), and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Dr. McCarthy’s training has taken him across the country and he is honored to bring this world-class experience to serve the folks of Indiana. Justin Miller, M.D.

Justin W. Miller, M.D. is a highly skilled, board-certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic spine surgeon. Dr. Miller’s fellowship consisted of 18 months of training with world-renowned spine surgeons Rick Sasso, M.D., Thomas Zdeblick, M.D., Paul Anderson, M.D., and Cliff Tribus, M.D.

Dr. Miller specializes in spinal disorders, such as: disc herniations, arthritic/degenerative processes, spinal stenosis, complex pediatric and adult kyphotic and scoliotic deformities, sports-related injuries, spondylolisthesis, myelopathy, infections, trauma, oncology, and revision surgeries. Zachary NaPier, M.D.

Zachary NaPier, M.D. is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic spine surgeon.  He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Dartmouth College before attending medical school at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  He completed orthopedic surgery residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, one of the country’s top orthopedic and neurosurgical spine centers.  Dr. NaPier underwent advanced spine training at the Harvard Spine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.  Dr. NaPier built a successful community practice in Northern California prior to joining Indiana Spine Group. Dr. NaPier has extensive training and experience with cutting edge minimally invasive and motion preserving surgical techniques that create less postoperative pain, decreased soft tissue injury and blood loss, and faster recovery times. He is also skilled in complex reconstruction of spinal deformities, degenerative conditions, and failed back syndrome. His practice involves comprehensive clinical and surgical care of adult and adolescent patients.

Dr. NaPier has a specific expertise in prone transpsoas lateral interbody fusion (PTP LIF) and has presented and published his techniques in addition to teaching other surgeons. He is also a prolific researcher, having authored or co-authored many clinical and basic science manuscripts, presentations, and textbook chapters in addition to receiving grants from organizations including the Cervical Spine Research Society and Scoliosis Research Society.
